3 Ways That Employers Can Help Latinas in the US

It is well-known that on average communities of color felt the majority of the effects of COVID-19. According to research done by the CDC, death rates among communities of color were higher than those that are white across all age groups. On top of that, the pandemic also exacerbated the already present inequities that Latina women face - things like receiving affordable care, education, and getting adequate jobs.

Before the pandemic, Latinas were already paid 45% less than their white male counterparts in the US. Collectively, the US has to stop looking at all diverse groups as other, but especially Latinas. Here are a few ways that you can support the Latinas throughout the United States.

Acknowledging There’s a Problem

The current workplace model is not built in a way that allows Latinas to thrive. According to the Pew Research Center, Latinas faced a steep decline in employment throughout COVID-19 compared to other demographics of both women and men.

If you are an employer, it is essential to engage with the Latinas in the workplace. Things like understanding problems for Latina moms and adapting to workplace policies are great ways to show your support. Elevating the multidimensional aspects of Latina work is paramount in order to create long-lasting efforts rather than band-aid solutions.

Active and Engaged Listening

When it comes to diversity, equity, and inclusion, the best thing for companies to do is listen and learn. Listen to what those on your team are saying. Pay attention to how they act around others in the company. Listen to what they’re not saying. Connect with your employees so that everyone feels heard.

To hire and retain Latinas in the workplace, start by listening to their needs and responding with compassion. The only way for you to be capable of creating policies that will help elevate Latinas is to allow them to lead the conversation.

Get Involved with Latinicida

One of the best ways to support Latina communities near you is by supporting organizations that provide resources for Hispanic women. Latinicida aims to bring mentorship and networking support to Latin women while also providing resources to help accomplish personal and professional ambitions. Some of our services include:

Events: Attend one of our in-person events or virtual masterclasses as Latinicida actively strives to educate on fundamental rights, financial literacy, and broadening Latina pride.

Networking: Currently, there are so many proud pioneering Latinas who are paving the way for the Latin community. We, as Latinas, are capable of so much more than what society restricts us to. Therefore, Latinicida desires to ease the burden by directly connecting you to women from a variety of industries.

Scholarships: Latinicida is an organization that strives for their community to invest in themselves; therefore, we want to invest in you. Whether it is college aid, a business investment, or a personal endeavor, if we believe it can actively aid in advancing our people then we want to invest.

To get involved with our organization, contact us at info@latinicida.org, or visit our website for more information! We would love to hear from you.
